Italian laws regarding home-based businesses
Americans operating a business in Italy, including a home-based business, without proper authority is prohibited. People authorized to live in Italy according to military orders are here solely for the purpose of supporting the NATO mission. All other businesses are subject to Italian laws, including those related to immigration, taxation, and labor. If an individual comes to Italy with the intention of working, he or she must obtain a different work visa or "visto di lavoro," and obtain the appropriate work permit called a "permisso di lavoro." This must be done while residing stateside, and is obtained from an Italian consulate, much like a mission visa, with which most Aviano base community members enter Italy. However, such a change in status could affect one's SOFA privileges as well as access to The Exchange or commissary. If someone is operating their own business, including home-based businesses, or working on the Italian economy, even part-time, without proper documentation, they could be subject to action by Italian authorities. Additionally, military members could also be subject to adverse administrative or Uniform Code of Military Justice action.
