9/23/2011 - AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- Owners of newer vehicles stationed at Aviano will have one less annual appointment to worry about thanks to an updated inspection schedule for all privately owned vehicles.

The change mirrors the Italian vehicle inspection system and reduces the frequency of POV inspections depending on the model year of the vehicle. According to Tech. Sgt. Xavier Daniel, 31st Security Forces NCO in charge of Pass and Registration, the change is two-fold.

"The new policy changed to better improve the 31st Logistics Readiness Squadron and 31st SFS customer service provided to the Aviano community," he said. "The new policy also benefits drivers and 31st LRS by saving more than 324 man hours annually."

The following guidance applies to all vehicles:

a. Vehicles less than 4 years old: Inspected upon initial registration into the AFI system and then once the vehicle reaches four years of age. For example, a vehicle manufactured in 2011 and first registered by the current owner at Aviano in June 2011 will be due for reinspection in June 2015.

b. Vehicles 4 to 6 years old: Inspected upon initial registration into the Armed Forces Italy system and then bi-annually. For example, a vehicle manufactured in 2010 and first registered by the current owner at Aviano in November 2011 will be due for reinspection in November 2014 and then again in November 2016.

c. Vehicles more than 6 years old: Inspected upon initial registration into the AFI system and then on an annual basis. For example, a vehicle that was manufactured in 1995 and first registered by the current owner in February 2011 will be due for re-inspection in February 2012, 2013, etc.

"Additionally, all vehicles must be inspected within 60 days upon transferring ownership of the vehicle to another eligible AFI privileged member," said Daniel. "Initial inspections must be accomplished no more than 15 days in advance of the date the sponsor first reports to register the vehicle."

For more information regarding POV inspections, contact the 31st SFS pass and registration office at DSN 632-4858.
