10/19/2012 - AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- One Airman's attention to detail helped save the Air Force $250,000 when he diverted a purchase request and recommended a local, inexpensive communications solution allowing the Maintenance Operation Control Center here the ability to communicate with the 31st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and their units.
Senior Airman Mark Keagy, 31st Communications Squadron radio frequency transmission specialist, is responsible for approving communications equipment requests across the base. Keagy specializes in troubleshooting and repairing a vast variety of communications devices and systems.
Using that knowledge, he recommended the 31st Maintenance Operations Squadron reprogram all of the 31st AMXS radios; allowing all three components the ability to communicate across one radio channel. Previously, the MOCC was constantly switching radio channels to communicate with all three units.
Once the 31st Maintenance Group leadership realized a cost-free solution was available, they gave Keagy the go-ahead.
"They were really determined to get the new equipment because they believed that they needed the system in order to improve operations," said Keagy, who was eager to help once he was given the green light. "With the help of another Airman in my office, we were able to reprogram 500 maintenance radios in only two days."
According to Master Sgt. Matthew Peck, 31st MOS MOCC superintendent, the reprogramming was an easy solution and allows the members of the MOCC to perform their job more efficiently.
