Italian American Friendship Festival plans in high gear for Sept. 4
AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy --
The ninth annual Italian American Friendship Festival, hosted by the Honorary Squadron Commanders Association (of Aviano Air Base) and the community of Roveredo in Piano, Italy, Sept. 4, is planned as a day full of activities for Airmen and their families, and opportunities to maintain and strengthen community relations with Italian coworkers, friends, families and neighbors.
The day's events kick off with a soccer game at 9:30 a.m. in Area D here, and conclude at 10:30 p.m. in the municipal square of Roveredo with music and dance by seven different groups.
The schedule is as follows:
9:30 a.m. - In Area D: The USAF Aviano Air Base soccer team takes on the Italian air force soccer team and Roveredo league for a three-way tournament
2 p.m. - Activities in the Roveredo in Piano school area commence to the music of the
"TAKAM Music Association"
2 to 6 p.m. - Sports and recreational games take place just one block southwest of the square in the school area. Sign up at the Dragon Fitness Center, 632-7459.
Activities include: Tennis, Cycling, Horse Riding for Kids, Beach Volleyball, Archery, Exhibition Bocce Ball,
Bouncy Castles, Basketball, American Football, Sport Fishing, Rifle Shooting
2 to 6 p.m. - Displays of base and local fire trucks, emergency response equipment and
Roveredo associations in the school area
3 p.m. - Historical reenactment of a popular ancient game called "Pindoi" in the school area
5:30 p.m. - Catholic mass in the Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew, including official remarks
6:30 p.m. - Reveille ceremony and September 11th commemoration in the Roveredo square "Piazza Roma" outside of the church
6:40 p.m. - Flyover performed by the La Comina Aeroclub
6:45 p.m. - Walking parade begins from the main square to the entertainment area
[6:30 p.m.] - Hosted dinner begins in the entertainment area
7 to 10:30 p.m. - Awards ceremonies for sports and display participants; music and dance performances by the following groups

While the different events provide many opportunities for Italians and Americans to interact in good spirit and friendly competition, the timing of September 4th closely aligns with the 9th anniversary of September 11th, and the 99th anniversary of the Pagliano and Gori Military Airport, known to Americans as Aviano Air Base. This year signifies the 50th anniversary of the Italian aerobatic team "Frecce Tricolori."
Driving directions to Roveredo Italian American Friendship Festival area
From Aviano Air Base, proceed south on A-P Highway (SP-7) approximately two kilometers. Turn right onto Via Risorgimento at the first traffic light. Proceed on the same road until you reach Piazza Roma, then continue past the arches. Take a right turn onto Via Carducci and look for the parking signs.
