ITAF Base Access Testing Policy

The following BASE ACCESS PROCEDURES (see full policy and attachments) have been implemented In accordance with Italian Air Force Policy under the current COVID conditions, and local agreements with the Italian Base Commander.

Per ITAF policy, all inbound members (PCS, TDY, Re-deployers) employed on the base must carry proof of a negative COVID test. The test must be conducted within 72 hours prior to arrival, or the next available duty day after arrival.

Sponsors MUST fill-out the following SharePoint site in order for in-bound members (PCS, re-deployment, or TDY) to be tested and released from ROM after 14 days https://portal.usafe.af.mil/sites/Aviano3/Lists/ROM%20Tracker/AllItems.aspx   (CAC Required)

TDY and Deployers Returning to Aviano AB

Below are instructions that sponsors of in-bound members must follow in order for in-bound member to receive a test upon return from TDY/return from deployment and be released after their 14 day ROM. See the 14-Day ROM website for additional details, policies, and delivery services.

  1. NLT 7 days prior to arrival, sponsor access SharePoint Site (CAC Required) https://portal.usafe.af.mil/sites/Aviano3/Lists/ROM%20Tracker/AllItems.aspx  and input in-bound members information.
  2. Once completed*, in-bound member will receive further instructions on how to sign-up for a COVID test.
  3. In-bound member will be on ROM for 14 days starting with day 0 being the day they arrived to Italy and day 15 being the day they are are released to work (date arrived +15). They will not be released until they receive a physical copy of their negative test result
  4. If their test is negative, they will receive an email with further instructions on how to pick up a physical copy of their results.
  5. If the sponsor or in-bound member has questions relating to the testing process or ROM status, please email usaf.aviano.31-mdg.mbx.covid-action-center@mail.mil

You have been enrolled to Aviano and can now schedule your test. Please sign-up for a testing slot NLT 1300 the day prior using the below instructions:

  1. Sign-up for your test using the following link (link will be provided)
    1. Schedule testing time under location #1 if you are staying in TLF bldg. 1484 or the dorms. Testing location #1 is outside between bldg. 1484 and the dorms.
    2. Schedule testing time under #2 if you are staying in all other TLF buildings. Testing location #2 is outside between bldg. 1481 and 1482.
    3. Schedule testing time under #3 if you are residing off base. Testing location #3 is Area 1 MDG COVID Sample Collection Station (follow posted signs after entering Area 1).
  2. Report to testing location at specified time with identification card.


New Arrivals to Aviano AB

Below are instructions that sponsors of in-bound members must follow in order for in-bound PCS member to receive a test post PCS and be released after their 14 day ROM. See the 14-Day ROM website for additional details, policies, and delivery services.

  1. NLT 7 days prior to arrival, sponsor access SharePoint Site and input in-bound members information (CAC Required).  https://portal.usafe.af.mil/sites/Aviano3/Lists/ROM%20Tracker/AllItems.aspx  
  2. Sponsor must ensure inbound members sends a copy of orders and/or medical clearance verification (for dependents AF1466 IF orders don’t have a bullet stating “dependents cleared for travel.”), their Date of Service and an Tricare enrollment form to  usaf.aviano.31-mdg.mbx.covid-action-center@mail.mil. TRICARE in order to be enrolled and scheduled a test.  In-bound member or sponsor must email these documents to email address above. The sponsor can be utilized to send an encrypted message to the email addresses. 
  3. Once required documents are submitted*, in-bound member will receive further instructions on how to sign-up for a COVID test.
  4. In-bound member will be on ROM for 14 days starting with day 0 being the day they arrived to Italy and day 15 being the day they are are released to work (date arrived +15). They will not be released until they receive a physical copy of their negative test result.

COVID Testing Facts and Questions

Most patients will be tested within 2-4 duty days.

If you are Active Duty and the COVID team determines testing is warranted, it will be mandatory.

If you are a dependent, it is highly recommended to be tested for COVID if you are symptomatic in order to identify positive cases and reduce further spread.

Please DO NOT go to the ER to get a COVID test faster. Many individuals going to the ER are sick.  To keep them safe, the local hospitals want to keep individuals with COVID symptoms away as much as possible.

If you are having COVID symptoms, please call the MDG appointment line at 0434 30 5000, option 1, then 2. If you meet the requirements for testing, we will get you scheduled for our soonest testing date. The length of time between when you are tested and when your results are available will depend on the kind of test used.

Yes, you can pay for testing off base. If you choose to test off base it is still recommended to call the MDG at 0434 30 5000, option 1, then 2. This will allow the COVID team to assess your unique situation and ensure no further ROM is necessary.

We would like to be able to offer same-day testing to all our beneficiaries, however our supplies are limited. A same-day test must be requested through the leadership for individuals who meet the criteria to receive one.

You CANNOT ride with anyone to your testing appointment unless they currently reside with you.

If you do not have your own vehicle to transport you, let the COVID team know. They can work a plan to best accommodate your testing.

If you are symptomatic and NOT a contact of a positive case or you are asymptomatic and ARE a contact of a positive case:  the other members in your household do not need to ROM while you are waiting for test results. Please ensure to practice physical distancing, hand-washing, and wearing masks even within your household.

If you are symptomatic and ARE a contact of a positive case: all other members in your household will need to ROM until your test results are back. All other active duty member’s in the household will receive a COVID screening and will be placed on ASIMS quarters.

You may contact the COVID Clinic by calling the MDG appointment line at 0434 30 5000, option 1, then 2.

Most patients will be tested with our Host Nation partners and results will be available in 1-2 duty days.

Some patients will be tested with a “send out” test and results can take up to 1 week.

Very few patients will receive a rapid test (only by request of Sq/CC) which has results within 1 duty day.

The MDG is unable to provide leisure travel testing at this time.

COVID testing takes place on the backside of the medical building on Area 1.

When coming through the gate on Area 1, take the right at the roundabout to the MDG parking area and drive all the way to the back of the parking lot. You will see reserved parking spaces for COVID testing.

Please DO NOT get out of your vehicle. A technician will come to your vehicle.

If you are awaiting release from your PCM team and have passed your expected date of release, you may call the medical appointment line at 0434 30 5000 option 1, then 2 and request to speak to your PCM about your ROM release.

You may be tested for influenza and/or strep at your testing appointment IF it is determined your symptoms qualify for those tests.
