9/30/2011 - WRIGHT PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Four Aviano Air Base Airmen participated in the 15th annual Air Force Marathon Sept. 17 here as part of the U.S. Air Force's in Europe team.

Among the USAFE team members, Capt. Joshua Ord finished first place for full, while Staff Sgt. Ryan Lucia garnered the top spot for half marathon. Tech. Sgt. Donnie Gray also ran the marathon while Staff Sgt. Jeremy Duddles completed the half marathon.

"The U.S. Air Force Marathon was an amazing experience," said Ord, 31st Operations Support Squadron airfield operations director. "Every step along the way, the runners were greeted with screaming crowds along the route. Their excitement fueled mine and the miles just seemed to tic away with little effort. Running towards the finish was a bitter sweet moment because the race was over but the enthusiasm of the crowd made me want to continue running. All in all, the fans and volunteers made the experience more than I could have hoped for."

Approximately 13,000 runners participated in the 2011 Air Force Marathon. There were representatives from every state, along with 15 countries, and 45 runners who have attended every U.S. Air Force Marathon since its inception in 1997. In addition to the 13,000 registered here, there were 3,100 people participating in eight deployed locations. Race events included full and half marathon and 10K and 5K races.

"The half marathon was a blast, the course was flat, fast and shady at times," said Lucia, 31st Communications Squadron cyber transport systems technician. "Wright Patterson Air Force Base did an incredible job as host. They made the Air Force Marathon a venue comparable to any large scale international race event."

Ord said being part of the USAFE team afforded him the opportunity to find out for himself just how great it is.

"Not only was it a blast representing USAFE and Aviano at this event, but seeing old friends and making new ones along the way is one major component to why I ran the marathon," said Ord.
