3/1/2012 - AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- The 2012 Air Force Assistance Fund campaign kicks off March 5 and runs until April 13, collecting donations to continue the Air Force's tradition of caring for its own.

Proceeds from the AFAF campaign go directly back into the Air Force community, specifically to the Air Force Aid Society, Air Force Village and Enlisted Village, and the General and Mrs. Curtis LeMay Foundation. The four charities benefit active-duty, Reserve and Guard members, retirees, surviving spouses and families. Last year, Aviano Airmen received more than $100,000 in support from the Air Force Aid Society.

"This year, as you are presented the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a fellow Airman, I'd like to suggest you reflect on the four affiliate charities we give to in the AFAF campaign," said Brig. Gen. Scott Zobrist, 31st Fighter Wing commander in his memorandum to Team Aviano. "The Air Force Aid Society is always there, whether to help with emergency funds or provide educational loans; the Air Force Village and Air Force Enlisted Village provide our retirees' widows and widowers with a home and a caring community; and the LeMay Foundation seeks out and lends a helping hand to widows and widowers of Air Force retirees through grants."

Team Aviano hopes to raise at least $77,000 during this year's campaign. Contributors can contact their unit's key worker to donate to one or more of the four charities.

"At Aviano Air Base, we have a proven track record of taking care of each other and I know this year will be no different," said Zobrist. "Every donation, from small to large, will help in a significant way."

For more information about how to donate, contact a unit key worker or call Capt. Megan Singer at DSN 632-5532 and Master Sgt. Anthony Schultz at DSN 632-5779. For more information about the charities, visit www.afassistancefund.org.
