606th Air Control Squadron 606th ACS Photo Details / Download Hi-Res MISSION The 606th Air Control Squadron, callsign “Primo,” is a mobile Command and Control combat unit “Ready Now” to meet our Nation’s call for exceptional tactical command and control. This elite unit is comprised of over 380 Airmen from 25 diverse Air Force specialty codes and $173M of rapidly deployable equipment including two TPS-75 radars, long-haul communications equipment, generators, 82 tactical vehicles, and a computer-based information system providing a real-time battlespace picture. 606th ACS is the only Control and Reporting Center outside of the continental United States, providing EUCOM operational flexibility. HISTORY The 606th, "Inspector of the Skies," was activated at Biggs Field, Texas in December 1945 as a Tactical Control Squadron. In January 1946, the unit was re-designated the 606th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron and relocated to Shaw Field, South Carolina in 1947. The squadron established a Tactical Air Direction Center and operated a multitude of radars to include the CPS-4, CPS-5, MPQ-2, TPS-1B and TPS-10. The 606th was ordered to relocate to Pusan, Korea after the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. On November 13, 1950 the 606th forward deployed a detachment northward to Sinanju Airfield where it operated a TPS-1B search radar and a CPS-4 height finder. The 606th provided early warning of enemy air attacks and directed B-26 Marauders supporting friendly ground forces during periods of darkness. In early January 1951, the 606th moved a MPS-5, a CPS-1 and a TPS-10A to a new site on top of a mountain near Pusan East Air Base. In March of 1951, the 606th moved from Pusan to Incheon and established itself at nearby Pyeongtaek. By March 18, the squadron was operating MPS-5, CPS-4, and GPS-1 radars. The 606th directed nightly Marauder and F-7F Tigercat missions against enemy troop concentrations, supply dumps, and motor convoys. On July 27, 1953 hostilities ceased in Korea and the 606th remained near Kimpo Air Base with detachments at Chunchon and Songgumri. In April of 1954, the Songgumri detachment was inactivated. In June a detachment was established at Kangnung airdrome. The squadron moved from Kimpo to Kangnung on October 20, 1954, retaining the detachment at Chunchon. At the Knangnung site, the squadron operated an MPS-7 search radar and a TPS-10D height-finder radar. By 1956, an MPS-14 and an MPS-8 replaced the TPS-10D. The squadron was inactivated in Knangnung October 1, 1957. The 606th Tactical Control Squadron began the European chapter of its history on January 15, 1964, when it was reactivated and assigned to the 86th Air Division (Defense) at Dobraberg, West Germany until July 1, 1974, when it was inactivated. On March 15, 1977, it was reactivated at Basdahl, West Germany and on November 1, 1992, it moved to Bitburg Air Base, Germany, and became the 606 Air Control Squadron under the 36th Fighter Wing. A year after arriving at Bitburg Air Base, the unit was then assigned to the 52d Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem AB, Germany on January 1, 1994. On Nov 1, 2016, the 606th relocated and joined the 31st Fighter Wing as part of the 31st Operations Group at Aviano Air Base, Italy as part of the European Infrastructure Consolidation Plan.
