Space Available Travel
Space-Available travel (Space-A travel) allows authorized passengers to occupy Department of Defense (DoD) owned and controlled aircraft surplus seats. Surplus seats are those seats remaining after all official travelers have been accommodated. Space-A travel cost is free, with few exceptions, but is allowed only on a non-mission interference basis.

The Passenger Terminal has several services available for travelers' convenience: children's lounge, Wi-Fi, fax machine, charging stations, and DSN and international phones.
Eligibility:
Active duty members are eligible for Space-A travel when they meet the following conditions: must be in a leave or pass status when registering must remain in a leave or pass status while awaiting travel and must be in a leave or pass status the entire period of travel.
Active duty members traveling under circumstances including (but not limited to) official Permanent Change of Station (PCS), Temporary Duty (TDY) or Temporary Additional Duty (TAD) orders are considered Space-Required (Space-R).
Benefit Highlights:
Space-A Travel is a privilege (not an entitlement) that accrues to Uniformed Services members as an avenue of respite from the rigors of Uniformed Services duty.
Reservations will not be made for any Space-A passenger. Travel opportunity shall be afforded on an equitable basis to officers, enlisted personnel, civilian employees and their accompanying dependents without regard to rank/grade, or branch of Uniformed Service. Your date and time of sign up will be used to determine travel priority amongst other travelers within your category; travel is on a first come first served basis.
Transportation may be between overseas stations, between Continental United States (CONUS) stations, and between overseas and CONUS stations where adequate border clearance facilities exist or can be made readily available.
Except where specifically noted in Chapter 6 of DOD 4515.13-R, dependents may travel Space-A to or from non-CONUS destinations when accompanied by their sponsor.
Active duty members, National Guard Soldiers (drill, federal and state active duty) and Reserve Soldiers on drill status traveling under circumstances including (but not limited to) official Permanent Change of Station (PCS), Temporary Duty (TDY), or Temporary Additional Duty (TAD) orders are considered Space-R.
Conditions of travel
There is no guaranteed space for any traveler. The Department of Defense is not obligated to continue an individual's travel, return him or her to the point of origin or any other point. Travelers shall have sufficient personal funds to pay for commercial transportation to return to their residence or duty station if space-available transportation is not available.
Registration information
Registration for Space-A travel can be accomplished in person, email, fax, or by utilizing our self sign up station.
In person - All of your travel documentation is required once you arrive at the Passenger Terminal: Leave Form for Active duty members, Command Sponsorship or Deployed Sponsor Letter for unaccompanied dependents, and ID Cards.
Email - Send your email request to AvianoSpaceA@us.af.mil and include the following information: Names of all passengers desiring travel, last four of social security number (Active Duty members)/passport numbers (dependents) of all travelers, copy of leave orders (Active Duty Members), Command Sponsorship Letter (unaccompanied dependents), Rank, Branch of Service and Destinations.
Fax - Send a Fax to DSN: 632-7782 and include the following information: Names of all passengers desiring travel, last four of social security number (Active Duty members)/passport numbers (dependents) of all travelers, copy of leave orders (Active Duty Members), Command Sponsorship Letter (unaccompanied dependents), Rank, Branch of Service and Destinations.
Self Sign Up - If you arrive at our terminal during non-operating hours you can utilize this option. You will find the self sign up station to the left of the main entrance. Instructions for self sign up are posted.

Due to OPSEC and AFI restrictions, flight information may not be disseminated over the telephone or e-mail unless the aircraft in question is within 72 hours of arrival/departure.
AMC allows 2 checked-in bags per person at 70lbs each.
Strollers and car seats do not count against your baggage limit.
No pets can be taken during Space-A travel.
Categories of Travel:
Category 1: Unfunded Emergency Leave (Only to be used in the event of extreme humanitarian reasons)
Category 2: Environmental Morale Leave (EML)
(Only for passengers stationed at a base that affords this type of incentive to its members-Not available from Aviano AB, Italy)
Category 3: Ordinary Leave (only for active duty and their accompanying dependants holding a valid leave form). Unaccompanied dependents of deployed members deployed for 365 days or more (must possess a deployment upgrade letter signed by their sponsor's commander, this can be found in the sponsor's command section and is valid for the entire time of the deployment.)
Category 4: Unaccompanied EML traveling without the sponsor. Unaccompanied dependents of deployed members deployed for 120 days or more (must possess a deployment upgrade letter signed by their sponsor's commander, this can be found in the sponsor's command section and is valid for the entire time of the deployment.)
Category 5: Unaccompanied command-sponsored dependants of military members stationed overseas (must possess a command sponsorship letter signed by their sponsor's commander, this can be found in the sponsor's command section and is valid for 90 days from the date on the letter)
Category 6: Retirees and their accompanying dependents. Dependents of retirees must be accompanied by their sponsor.
