555th Fighter Generation Squadron

HISTORY

The U.S. Air Force transitioned from large Aircraft Maintenance Squadrons (AMXS) to smaller, fighter-aligned Fighter Generation Squadrons (FGS) under the Combat Oriented Maintenance Organization (COMO) to increase readiness and unity between maintenance and operations by creating smaller, more agile units with a dedicated commander. This shift allows for a more hands-on leadership approach, better resource management, enhanced fighter pilot training, and improved preparation for high-end conflict scenarios by fostering a "live, train, and fight together" mentality between the FGS and their paired fighter squadron.

Constituted as 555 Fighter Generation Squadron on 27 Jun 2022 activated on 27 Jul 2022. The 555th Fighter Generation Squadron (FGS), also known as the Triple Nickel,  comprised of approximately 300 Airmen is responsible for maintaining and rapidly deploying F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft and personnel to support national security objectives and NATO allies.

While the Fighter Generation Squadron is a newer entity, the 555th unit has roots in World War II as the 555th Bombardment Squadron and later the 555th Fighter Squadron, earning a distinguished reputation in combat operations.

LEGACY AND MOTTO

The "Triple Nickel" nickname and reputation as a world-famous and highly respected fighter squadron were established by its fighter counterparts, a legacy the current generation squadron supports and upholds.

The phrase "Once Green" refers to the squadron's historical association with the color green, which symbolizes their lineage and the concept of being "nickel-plated" or a member of the Triple Nickel family. "Always Green" signifies that this membership and the spirit of the squadron continue throughout a member's life.
