Our final destination was to Los Gigantes, a town which features 500-meter-high cliffs known as “Acantilados de los gigantes” or the "Cliffs of the giants." The cliffs are a sight to behold and seem almost unreal. The town, has a city feel with its many restaurants and stores. You can find everything from clothing to food of many cultures including, Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Italian and more.

Next on our itinerary was Parque del Drago located next to the Church of San Marcos in the municipality of Icod de los Vinos. In the garden stands a more than 16-meter-high dragon tree, referred to locally as “El Drago Milenario” or the “Thousand-Year-Old Dragon.” Although you can pay an entry fee to get up close and personal with this giant, we opted to view the tree from the plaza besides the Church of San Marcos, where you can get a full view of the garden for free. Unfortunately, the cable car station, meant to take us to Mount Teide’s peak, was closed due current weather conditions. Our drive wasn’t in vain though, we spent a couple hours exploring Teide National Park, which surrounds Mount Teide. The Mount Teide/Teide National Park area was really interesting because unlike the other locations we visited, its scenery was made up mostly of rocks and shrubs. It was also much colder than the rest of the island because of the elevation, so I suggest bringing a light jacket such as fleece if you decide to visit this location. To complete the first day of our vacation, we decided to visit Playa de Almáciga. Much like Masca, the drive to Almáciga beach was a bit scary, but was accompanied by the most stunning views. We caught ourselves stopping numerous times to take in the landscape and take too many photos. After multiple stops we finally got to the beach. The first stop of our trip was to picturesque Masca. Despite a well-established road system, the drive to Masca was a bit daunting due to the road’s windy nature. Unless you’re used to driving through mountains, I suggest taking it slow and steady. Once we reached the village, located at the foot of Teno Massif, one of Tenerife’s three volcanic formations, we came to the unanimous decision that the drive was well worth it—it was gorgeous! In addition to the beautiful landscape, the village offers a variety of cafes and restaurants. If you do get the chance to visit, I suggest giving their cactus lemonade a try.
