Wyvern Warrior Team of the Week: 57th RQS
This week’s Wyvern Warrior Team of the Week is U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Katelyn Ramsey, 57th Rescue Squadron aviation resource management NCOIC, and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Steven Brown, 57th RQS medical logistics NCOIC. On an everyday basis, Ramsey is in charge of maintaining all the records for the 57th RQS pararescuemen, ensuring they are qualified and up-to-date on their trainings as well as maintaining their jump record. Brown maintains all of the medical equipment the pararescuemen use in their day-to-day training and real-world situations. He also maintains all the consumables for the 57th RQS such as IV’s, needles, saline solutions, and anything else medical related. “Our main priorities are for personnel recovery as well as to team up with our partner nations and build bonds,” said Brown. “We train them up on how we do things and learn from them to make ourselves better as well.” While what they do on an everyday basis is extensive, so is how they responded to a real-world difficult situation. On Oct. 12, 2022, while on the way back from fueling and operations in the Adriatic Sea, Brown and Ramsey spotted a distressed boat and without hesitation proceeded to help. The boat was dead in the water, completely unable to move and at mercy of the wind and current. Despite the language barrier, Brown and Ramsey were able to navigate the 57th RQS boat and maintain a safe distance while providing a tow rope to attach to the inoperable vessel. They safely towed the vessel out of the current and up to a marina where they were able to dock the boat and two passengers without incident. The two passengers were incredibly grateful and tried to offer a reward, but Brown and Ramsey refused. Brown and Ramsey demonstrated the core values by displaying a calm composure and great character throughout the encounter. “It’s really rewarding to be able to have the trust that our leadership gives us so that were able to do what needed to be done,” said Ramsey.
