31st FG Spitfires at Castel Volturno, Italy

A fleet of 31st Fighter Group Spitfires lines the runway at Castel Volturno, Italy. The 31st FG provided cover for the Allied landings at Anzio. From January through March 1944, the 31st FG covered and patrolled the area in support of American forces. The group encountered significant Luftwaffe resistance, and between Jan. 22 and 31, destroyed 12 enemy aircraft.
