Murano: Island of glass

The Mazzega Glass Factory is one of many fornaci, or glassmaking furnaces, on the island of Murano. The fornaci workers are famous for their craftsmanship. The glassblowers work in front of blazing fires to heat the sand and slowly add color, gold and other ornamentation. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Katherine Windish)
