Istanbul: A modern Middle-Eastern getaway
The Basilica Cistern is one of several hundred ancient cisterns that silently rest below the surface of Istanbul. Built in the fourth century, the cistern was forgotten about for centuries until 1545. It can hold approximately 100,000 tons of water and is home to the famous Medusa head pillars. which have been mysteriously positioned upside down and sideways. (U.S. Air Force photo/2nd Lt. Allie Delury)
