Capt. Mari Metzler, 31st Aerospace Medicine Squadron operational physiologist, sits on a C-130 Hercules before a flight, Dec. 10, 2013, at Aviano Air Base, Italy.To help pilots recognize when they are suffering from conditions like hypoxia or spatial disorientation, Metzler trains Aviano’s fighter pilots with proper techniques that mitigate physiological and human factor hazards during flying operations.
