AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- It’s almost time to head out on the open road and hit the ski slopes, whether they’re in Piancavallo or the Swiss Alps.
While it’s fun to take weekend get-a-ways, Team Aviano members are reminded to look out for dangers during cold weather conditions.
“Northern Italy winters are full of snow on the mountains and rain down below, with both comes a higher probability for vehicle accidents,” said Tech. Sgt. David Mace, 31st Fighter Wing Safety NCO in-charge of occupational safety. “We at the safety office would like the base population to know the dangers and be prepared for them before traveling during the winter.”
To combat Northern Italy’s freezing rain and fog, drivers should remember to:
-
Maintain or drive slower than posted speed limit when there is reduced visibility.
-
Drive defensively and be mindful of other vehicles.
-
Maintain at least a 3-second braking distance behind another vehicle.
-
Ease off the brakes and steer the vehicle in the direction of travel during loss of control.
Winter travelers are encouraged to:
-
Check weather conditions before driving – Store an emergency kit and a blanket in your vehicle.
-
Ensure tires are in good condition. (Mud-snow tires are recommended)
-
Familiarize yourself with country and road requirements for snow tires and chains.
-
Verify snow chains are the correct size and know how to use them.
By practicing safe driving techniques, Team Aviano members can enjoy the winter season at home or on the road.
“We want everyone to enjoy the winter months, but we want people to plan ahead and be careful on their trips,” said Mace.
