Vehicle crash outside base claims life of Aviano Airman

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- A member of the 31st Security Forces Squadron was killed in a motor vehicle crash which occurred near the base June 2 at approximately 5 a.m.

Airman 1st Class Dennis A. Felton II, a security response team member, was pronounced dead at the scene by Italian emergency responders after the vehicle, in which he was a passenger, crashed at the intersection of SP7 and Via dei Menegoz in Aviano.

The driver, an Airman assigned to the 31st Logistics Readiness Squadron, was transported to Pordenone hospital following the crash and has since been released.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss," said Brig. Gen. Jon A. Norman, 31st FW commander. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and many others affected. We will work closely with our Italian counterparts to determine the cause of this tragedy in hopes to help prevent such occurrences in the future."

The cause of crash is under investigation by both Italian and American authorities.
