First & Last Name: Kelley A. Hursh

Rank: Capt

Unit: 31st Dental Squadron

Duty Title: General Dentist

How long have you worked for the military?
I have been an active duty Air Force member for three years. I was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in April of 2005, and I was an inactive reservist while earning my Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at Temple University School of Dentistry.

How do you support the 31st FW mission?
As a General Dentist, I support the 31st Fighter Wing everyday by ensuring that all of our active duty members are ready to fly, fight, and win. Each and every airman must be ready at any given moment to deploy, and that includes dental readiness. I work to keep all of our patients in optimal dental health, so that when it comes time for he/she to deploy, there are no dental problems delaying their departure.

What's one thing you learned about Italy's history, people, and culture?
One thing that I've learned is that Italy didn't exist until 1866 when the unification campaign finished. Prior to this, Italy was largely comprised of city states that retained individual governance, defense, architecture, wine, food, and even languages. Consequently, many Italians find themselves identifying their heritage to their individual region before their country. In every region that I visit, I am able to witness a different culture, dialect, architectural style, and cuisine; but one commonality exists, all Italian's take great pride in their rich history and culture.

What's one advantage of being stationed overseas?
The obvious advantage of being stationed overseas is the opportunity to travel the world. I have seen the majestic landscapes of Europe and immersed myself if a variety of unique cultures. I've enhanced my knowledge of European geography and history. I have tales of journeys that I might otherwise have never experienced.

What's your favorite European destination and why?
Thus far, my favorite European destination is Cinque Terre, Italy for its breathtaking scenery and for its representation of Italian culture. Each of the five villages has utilized its natural resources to the fullest extent while still maintaining the natural beauty of the land and the sea.
