Laser pointer abuse sparks security forces, Carabinieri investigation Published May 22, 2012 31st Fighter Wing Public Affairs AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- Recent misuse of laser pointers around the airfield has investigators from the 31st Security Forces Squadron and Italian Carabinieri seeking suspects and information. Several incidents of small lasers being directed into aircraft have been reported by pilots on approach and take off from the base, an action which could have significant consequences both for the pilot and for the perpetrator found engaging in such an activity. "While our security forces Airmen have limited jurisdiction off base, we have a very close working relationship with the Italian Carabinieri who are investigating these situations," said Capt. Gregory DeGruchy, 31st SFS operations officer. "Both our organizations are staying vigilant to ensure this sort of action is swiftly countered by increased host nation efforts." Depending on the circumstances and the perpetrator's nationality, offenders can expect prosecution from U.S. Federal, military or Italian law, according the 31st Fighter Wing Legal Office. "In addition to being a potentially serious distraction during any phase of flight, lasers can cause harmful effects to the pilot ranging from mild surface burns to permanent retina damage and vision loss," said Capt. Chris Reichlen, 31st Aerospace Medicine Squadron aerospace and operational physiologist.
