Members of the 31st Security Forces Squadron, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the Italian Carabinieri are investigating suspicious activity which occurred May 8 in Area 1 of Aviano Air Base, Italy.

A dependent child reported that she was approached by a man in an older model red-burgundy van who attempted to lure her into his vehicle.

"The child is safely with her family, and we're working with the local police to gather additional information," said Brig. Gen. Scott Zobrist, 31st Fighter Wing commander.

Members of the Team Aviano community are encouraged to use increased vigilance and report suspicious activity through the base law enforcement desk at DSN 632-7200 or 4916 (Commercial: 0434-30-7200 or 4916).

"Our force protection team is among the best in the Air Force, and they are watching out for us," said Zobrist. "However, it's also important that we are watchful for one another."

The general highlighted that while Aviano is a very safe community, it is still important to talk with children about strangers.

"As parents, we are the ultimate wingmen for our children," said Zobrist. "It's important to sit down and talk with our children, providing them with the tools to recognize dangerous situations and make good decisions."

The National Crime Prevention Counsel offers a library of tips for parents and guidance on how to discuss these topics with children.
