Air Force Aid Society bridges gap for overseas housing costs Published March 1, 2012 By Senior Airman Katherine Windish 31st Fighter Wing Public Affairs AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- The Air Force Aid Society has implemented the new Housing Assistance Loan Overseas program designed March 1, to bridge the expense gap for Airmen assigned overseas and moving into economy housing. "When AFAS officials made a trip to Ramstein, Germany, in February, they were able to get a better understanding of the costs associated with permanent change of station moves in Europe and come up with a program to relieve stress for Airmen PCSing overseas," said Shonte Gonzalez, Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness specialist. "There was a huge need for this type of program, especially in the Aviano area. The costs of living in Italy are substantial and can put Airmen into financial hardship if they have not yet received their entitlements. This program bridges a gap in that regard, making life much easier for transitioning families." The loan can be used as an advance for up-front costs such as rent, security deposits, move-in costs and paint to secure housing and satisfy landlords before overseas pay and entitlements have been received. It does not take the place of entitlement programs and must be paid upon receipt of entitlements. If the loan is not paid, repayment will be secured by a three-month automatic allotment.
