When the weather starts to free us of warm winter coats and snow boots, it's not only a sign that spring is here, it means it's motorcycle season. To kick off the season, more than 115 riders and 85 bikes met at a local restaurant in Aviano, on March 27, for the 18th annual blessing of the bike ceremony. Riders showed off some of the custom artwork they had done to their bikes and talked parts and repairs.

Some riders had Harley Davidson, Hondas, Katanas and even a few dirt bikes. On this day, they were all the same; riders trying to be safe and even asking favor from a higher power.

"I love the camaraderie of being a motorcycle rider," said Anneta Wetz, director of the HOG Chapter. "I have been on the side of the rode in my car and people have passed me by, but there has never been a time when I'm on my bike and I stop, even if just for a break, and another motorcyclist doesn't come by and ask if I'm ok. They are there when you need them."

Members from the HOG Chapter, the Blue Knights and lone riders headed up to the Moudonna del Monte,"Holy Lady of the Mountain" Church for the ceremony. A priest gave the blessing in Italian and then was translated in English. The priest then proceeded to bless each bike with holy water.

Riding motorcycles are enjoyable but can be dangerous just as with driving any vehicle. Prior to riding, motorcyclists will need to take a safety course and have all their safety equipment including helmet, jacket, gloves and riding boots. Motorcyclists interested in riding can contact the ground safety office at 632-4662.
