Aviano celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Base personnel and family members took part in an observance dinner honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 20 at the Italian Mensa.

Chaplain (Capt.) Christian Williams, from the 37th Training Wing at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, was the guest speaker for the dinner and highlighted some of the many achievements made by Mr. King during his speech.  Airman 1st Class Colette Thomas, 31st Medical Support Squadron, sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing," and Brig. Gen. C.Q. Brown Jr., 31st Fighter Wing commander, provided closing remarks.   

President Reagan signed a bill Nov. 2, 1983, creating a federal holiday in Mr. King's honor.  The federal holiday called Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first celebrated in 1986 and is held on the third Monday in January.
