On Nov. 26, the Base Carabinieri telephoned the Emergency Communications Center and stated the Fontanafredda Carabinieri were patrolling the area and picked up an intoxicated American active duty military member. Carabinieri transported the individual to their station for safety purposes only. Security Forces were notified and later took custody of the individual for transport back to Aviano. No further action was taken. Despite being responsible enough not to get behind the wheel after drinking, vulnerability to criminal activity can ensue when alone and impaired. To avoid becoming susceptible to crime or engaging in criminal behavior when consuming alcohol, always have a wingman and always have a backup plan. If both precautionary measures fall short, refer to all available resources. Airmen Against Drunk Driving is available on weekend and holiday nights from midnight to 5 a.m. AADD can be reached at 0434-30-5938. In addition, the numbers of supervisors, friends, co-workers, and first sergeants should be kept in your phone in the event you need assistance. As a last resort, you can always contact the Law Enforcement desk for assistance.

On Nov. 29, an active duty military member telephoned the ECC and stated that someone had broken into his Roveredo residence and had stolen property. Upon arrival of the responding patrols, the individual stated that they had secured their residence at 10 a.m. on Nov. 25 and returned at 9 p.m. on Nov. 29 to find the back door open. Approximately $200 worth of jewelry was missing and several items were displaced. Unfortunately, there is not a physical deterrence which guarantees home security. Criminals can either be too desperate or too imprudent to recognize the risks and consequences of breaking the law. In addition to physically safeguarding your home with locks and alternative security measures, one might consider employing the assistance of neighbors if possible. When traveling for several days at a time, ask a neighbor to watch for suspicious activity and if possible, park in your drive way. After all, the watchful eyes of alert neighbors can be an advantageous layer of security when situations demand a quick response.

Crime prevention tip of the week:
If the Base Exchange doesn't satisfy all of your holiday shopping needs, local Christmas markets may be an exciting alternative. Remember, this isn't the United States., if you decide to wonder out, stay aware and take proper precautions to ensure a satisfying experience. Dress casually and comfortably without attracting unnecessary attention to yourself. Avoid wearing articles which represent the U.S. or any military affiliation. Also, stray away from wearing expensive jewelry or designer handbags. This could make you an easy target for thieves and pickpockets. As an extra safety measure, always shop with friends and family members. Isolated individuals are more vulnerable and make easier targets.
