Cop's Corner Published Oct. 16, 2009 By 31st Security Forces Squadron AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- On Oct. 8, an active duty military member reported someone stole their debit card number and has been making charges against their account. The Airmen noticed that the account had two unauthorized charges on it from a gas station in Florida. The amount charged to the account was undisclosed at the time of the report. Identity theft is a major crime that threatens everyone. Retain an annual credit report to ensure your identity remains in good standing. On Oct. 8, an active duty military member reported someone had stolen their wallet containing personal property. The Airmen stated the stolen wallet was properly secured in their back pocket and contained one military identification card, one stateside driver's license, one AFI license, one Codice Fiscale and several debit/credit cards. The Airmen was unable to recover the stolen property. Be mindful of where our valuables are at all times. Prevent loss of personal items by limiting the amount of valuable items carried in your purse or wallet. Only carry what is essential for daily activities or what is necessary for the trip. On Oct. 6, an active duty military family member reported someone broke into their residence and stole personal property. The unidentified offenders made entry into the residence through an upstairs window after walking up an exterior staircase and pulling themselves onto the window ledge. The unidentified individual proceeded to take 12 euro off of the bedroom table and exited through the front door of the residence. We have seen several incidents of residential burglaries over the past few weeks. We encourage everyone to keep all windows and doors locked while you are away from your residence. On Oct. 5, an active duty military member reported someone had stolen their black overnight bag which contained personal property. The Airman stated the black overnight bag contained $135, 45 euro, two credit cards, one common access card and one debit card. The Airman further stated they last saw the bag at the Pordenone Hospital and was unable to recover the stolen property. Making a visit to the hospital can be a very stressful time. Avoid carrying excessive amounts of cash or unnecessary forms of personal identification when you can. On Oct. 5, an active duty military member reported someone broke into their dormitory storage locker and stole personal property. The Airman stated that their training chemical warfare gear bag and equipment was taken. The Airman was unable to recover the stolen property. While this Airman took the necessary steps in securing the equipment, one additional step individuals securing property in common areas should consider is making periodic checks on the property to ensure its well being.
