Cop's Corner Published Sept. 24, 2009 AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- On Sept. 18, an active duty military member reported two unknown personnel attempted to break into the member's house. The individual secured the door with a security chain at approximately 4:30 a.m. About twenty minutes later, while eating breakfast, the member heard the door open, but the door was stopped by the security chain. The member saw two unknown personnel attempting to open the door, and when they saw the member, they fled. This is a great example of how important it is to secure your door when not in use. The simple act of securing the security chain, prevented a potentially dangerous intruder from entering the member's house. If for any reason an intruder enters your house, protect yourself and your family, get out of the house as soon as possible, and notify security forces. On Sept. 10, an active duty military member reported a breaking and entering/larceny of private property. The member stated a family member departed and secured the residence at about 7:40 a.m., and when the member arrived an hour later, the latch on the kitchen door had been broken and the door was wide open. The stated property stolen was an IPod Classic, Nintendo DS, 58 euro, and 20 liters worth of gas coupons. Any time you leave your house. it is very important to secure your doors and windows. If the member had not done so, many more items may have been stolen. To prevent a similar incident from happening to you, consider keeping a dog in the house while you are gone. In addition, you can leave a radio or television on, lights on during hours of darkness, or have a neighbor or friend you trust keep an eye on your house while you are gone. Try not to make it obvious your house is empty. On Sept. 8, an active duty military member reported two bicycles had been stolen. The member secured the bicycles with a pad lock and chain behind Building 1427. When the member returned, both bicycles were missing. The total value of the bicycles was approximately $608. It is always a good rule of thumb to secure personal property when it is left unattended. Consider using a high-security bicycle lock, ensure the lock secures the bicycle and the bicycle is secured to a fixed object such as a bicycle rack.
