Name: Airman 1st Class Aaron O'Connor

Unit: 31st Maintenance Operations Squadron

Duty Title: Aircraft Maintenance Scheduler

How long have you worked for the military? Two years

Hometown City, State and/or Country: Houston, Texas

How do you support the 31st Fighter Wing mission?
I manage all aircraft maintenance and scheduling to meet mission needs.

What's one thing you've learned about Italy's history, people and culture?
I have learned several things while I have been stationed in Italy. The most significant; however, has to be developing a better understanding of this country's history. It amazes me that the people of Italy once controlled more than half of the new world for centuries, but appear to be such humble people. I think it is an awesome experience for anyone to have the opportunity to walk around this landscape and out of nowhere to see parts of its history. I believe that it is truly one of the world's greatest civilizations.

What's one advantage of being stationed overseas?
One of the many advantages of having the opportunity to be stationed overseas is the accessibility to travel. I have been allowed to experience a culture that was unknown to me until I received this assignment. They are experiences that I probably wouldn't have had if it weren't for the military.

What's your favorite European destination and why?
Rome, Italy, is my favorite destination in Europe so far. It is a city filled with beauty and history. Its rich culture and religious foundation are unmatched around the world. A great example would be the Sistine Chapel. It is truly a wonder to behold.

Why Airman O'Connor was nominated as one of Aviano's Finest?
"Airman O'Connor is an outstanding member of the 31st MOS plans and scheduling team. Upon his arrival in May 2008, he was placed in charge of the documentation section, a post usually reserved for a seasoned staff sergeant. He welcomed the challenge and performed flawlessly. He completely overhauled the aircraft records (jacket file) program by creating new checklists and implementing new procedures that resulted in a 99 percent quality assurance pass rate. He also received an "Outstanding" rating during the U.S. Air Forces in Europe staff assistance visit. Airman O'Connor is a dedicated and energetic Airman, who has been a valuable member of the 31st MOS family."
