Unit: 31st Maintenance Squadron

Rank: Senior Airman

How long have you worked for the military? 3 years, 9 months

First & Last Name: Johnathan Hicks

Duty Title: Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment technician

Hometown City, State and/or Country: Augusta, Ga.

How do you support the 31st Fighter Wing mission? I provide calibration support for the Southern European region. I calibrate anything from aircraft test equipment to pediatric scales.

What's one thing you've learned about Italy's history, people and culture? I've learned that Italians have a deep and rich history stretching back to the days of Christ. The history is evident in modern life. For example, they still employ traditional methods of wine making that produces wines enjoyed around the world. I've also noticed that life runs at a different pace -- it's much easier to relax in Italy. Italian culture has actually built time into every day to stop, relax and enjoy life a little.

What's one advantage of being stationed overseas? Being afforded the opportunity to see different cultures and learn how other nationalities get things done.
What's your favorite European destination and why? My favorite destination so far is Santorini, Greece. I got to see Santorini on a Greek cruise package offered by a local travel agent. The trip was made memorable by the beauty of the island. My wife and I rented a four-runner and saw as much as we could.

Why did I nominate Airman Hicks as one of Aviano's Finest: "Senior Airman Hicks is not afraid to lead from the front. He is an innovative young man that will take the Air Force in a positive direction. He has already established himself as a mentor in the wing through his activities in the Aviano Airmen Advisory Council. "Aviano's Finest" is a fitting description for this young Airman." - Senior Master Sgt. David Batiz, 31st Maintenance Squadron
