Aviano motorcyclists are revving up their engines in anticipation of the 2nd Annual Aviano Motorcycle Rodeo April 20.

The all-day event, which begins with a mandatory briefing for all base motorcyclists at 8 a.m. in the base theater, includes a variety of activities including competitions, local area rides and a barbecue.

"Every year, we are required (by Air Force regulation) to do a preseason motorcycle safety briefing," said Staff Sgt. Daniel Fleig, Aviano Motorcycle Rodeo coordinator. "In years past, some of these briefings ran over four hours. We were all tired of the system in place, so while I was working in the safety office last year, I decided an event like the rodeo could accomplish the same thing, but in a fun atmosphere. With the success of last years' rodeo, we decided to do it again."

This year's event kicks off with an hour-long briefing that covers such topics as seasonal hazards, regulations, local motorcycle clubs and general safety tips. Afterward, participants will meet up in the post office and Airman and Family Readiness Center parking lots for individual motorcycle inspections. Other events include a drunk goggle bicycle race, slow race competition to see who can best control their motorcycle at slow speeds, an obstacle course, motorcycle demonstrations by local riders and local area rides.

There will also be door prizes awarded throughout the event as well as an awards presentation for all the competition winners.

Sergeant Fleig added that while the safety refresher is an important aspect of the Rodeo with the riding season now underway, the event also provides the opportunity for motorcyclists to network.

"It's important that motorcyclists network," said Sergeant Fleig. "During the event, they will have the opportunity to meet many other motorcyclists on base and learn about the local clubs. It kind of goes into the wingman concept - motorcyclists hanging out with other motorcyclists will hopefully be a good influence on one another."

Sergeant Fleig added that anyone is welcome to attend the event.

"We welcome everyone to come out," he said. "People say 'mandatory fun' all the time, but this mandatory motorcyclist event will actually be a lot of fun for everyone who attends. Plus, we will be offering a barbecue between the AFRC and BX, so if folks want to eat some good food and watch the competitions, they're more than welcome to come out and enjoy."

The barbecue is free to motorcyclists. All others must pay a small fee to eat.
