Your gas mask is your first line of defense against chemical and biological warfare agents but it will only work if it fits correctly. Bioenvironmental Engineering does initial and recurring gas mask fit tests for everyone that is issued a mask to make sure that it fits properly. Even if you're not concerned about unconventional warfare agents there are still a few reasons to get a gas mask fit test. First, it's a requirement for deployment. Second, your chain of command or external inspectors may ask to see your fit test certificate.

How do I know if I need a fit test? All Airmen who are issued a gas mask need a current fit test certificate.

What should I do with my gas mask fit test certificate? Make copies and keep one in your gas mask carrier, one in your personal records, and give one to your unit deployment manager (UDM).

How do I know if my fit test certificate is still valid? Check your gas mask fit test certificate. If it's been 38 months since your last fit test then it's time to schedule an appointment. You can also ask your UDM if it's time for you to get another fit test.

How do I schedule a gas mask fit test? For newcomers, Bioenvironmental Engineering will do the gas mask fit test at the point of issue. All other fit tests are done by appointment.

Appointments can be scheduled by calling 632-5542. The Bioenvironmental Flight is located in Building 10271, across from Pass & ID.

How do I prepare for a fit test? Refrain from eating, chewing gum, drinking, or smoking for 30 minutes prior to the test. Females must be prepared to unfasten their hair to complete the test. If you wear corrective lenses then bring your optical inserts with you.

What's the best place to get more information on my gas mask? Your Airman's Manual!
