Aviano's pre-kindergarten to 5th graders received hands-on biblical learning during a week-long Vacation Bible School at the chapel.

"The theme was biblical stories related to water," said Lauren Johnston, 31st Fighter Wing chapel Protestant religious education coordinator. "It was so much fun. We had activities and snacks for the kids to enjoy."

Ms. Johnston and the other program director, Mara Jasso, had 30 volunteers who helped with the 70 students that arrived each day.

"We hold VBS once a summer," Ms. Johnston said. "It's part of the chapel's summer program to help them keep their studies going."

Activities during the three-hour long classes included arts and crafts, games, science, Bible study, discussing biblical stories, music, prayer and worship.

"On the first day, we made baby Moses in a basket," Ms. Johnston said. "We also had fisherman crafts and Friday we painted seashells."

The VBS is part of the Wednesday night children's Bible study classes that coincide with the parent Wednesday night classes.

Ms. Johnston said the children's Bible study classes are a lot like Sunday school classes.

The Wednesday night adult classes can include marriage class, discipleship and Bible study.

The classes for both kids and adults are from 6 to 7 p.m. A free dinner starts at 5 p.m.
