AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- This week’s Wyvern Warrior of the Week is U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Tyler Borgstrom, 31st Maintenance Squadron (MXS) Crash Recovery NCO in charge, for his work in preparing Aviano Air Base for the inspection.
Borgstrom coordinated with multiple base agencies to practice and perfect the 31st Fighter Wing exercises.
His Transient C-17 knowledge and expertise allowed him to provide tactical leadership and establish a strategic cargo-loading site with Airfield Management, 31st Munitions Squadron and Plans and Programs (XP).
“The most important and rewarding part of the job is knowing we have a team capable of aircraft recovery operations,” said Borgstrom. “While Crashed, Damaged, Disabled Aircraft Recovery (CDDAR) is our smallest footprint in daily operations, we perform an annual exercise incorporated with ITAF counterparts to gain knowledge and improve Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP's).”
Borgstrom also coordinated with 31st Security Forces to develop escort convoy and follow-me procedures. Furthermore, he acted as liaison for the exercise aircrew to coordinate support from the petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL), aerospace ground equipment (AGE), 31st SFS, and 31st MXS support.
“The most challenging aspect is communication and coordination amongst many organizations,” he said. “Twelve Airmen are responsible for representing Aviano Air Base as they provide the first contact to transient aircraft, building F-16 wheel assemblies, and maintaining readiness for In-Flight Emergencies (IFE's) & Ground Emergencies (GE's) response.”
A Duluth, Minnesota native, Borgstrom has been a member of Wyvern Nation for a year and four months of his 16-year Air Force career. His current career goals are taking care of his fellow Airmen and making Master Sergeant before he retires, as Borgstrom’s personal motto is to always shoot for excellence.
