AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy – -- AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy – The 510th Fighter Squadron “Buzzards” trained alongside the Romanian air force’s MiG-21s at Campia Turzii, Romania, March 28-31.
This was the last opportunity for the 510th FS to fly with the MiG-21s before they are retired in mid-May.
The squadron and Romanian air force flew one-versus-one basic fighter maneuvers sorties.
“We were able to successfully integrate with partner nations with minimal time and planning,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Nolan Mallory, 510th FS F-16 pilot.
The Buzzards also had the opportunity to fly an Offensive Counter Air sortie with the French air force Mirage 2000s.
“It was great to interact with other fighter pilots, no matter the nationality or airframe they fly,” said Mallory.
Participation in joint trainings enhance the 31st Fighter Wing’s professional relationships and improves overall coordination with allies and partner militaries during times of crisis.
“The most rewarding part was being able to interact with the pilots and hang out after flying together,” said Mallory. “They were very hospitable and welcoming to our group. Hearing their stories was unique but makes us realize we are more similar than it would first appear.”
The U.S. and its allies and partners are mutually committed to strengthen our deterrence efforts and adapt through improving readiness and responsiveness. European allies and partners form the backbone to building partner nation capabilities, enhance interoperability, and develop opportunities for strategic access.
