A new year, for many, is the perfect time to restart those once-desired resolutions or forgotten life goals.  While goals may range from becoming the best video gamer to scoring an excellent on a fitness assessment, none should be accomplished alone.

For individuals who need a helping hand tackling those healthy-living resolutions, Team Aviano's 31st Force Support Squadron fitness center staff kicked off their annual "The Biggest Winner" competition Jan. 4, 2016.  For the skeptical or under-motivated, here are six reasons to sign up and get started on a new healthy habit.

1. New Year's resolution, why not?
We have all seen the New Year's resolution memes, but don't let them be a discouragement. Get in on the action, hang in there and make your resolution a life-long habit. "The Biggest Winner" competition runs until March 5, 2016, committing to the competition for three months will help prevent you from giving up on your resolution after a week or two.

2. [Healthy]Gains!
Jump on the gain train! It doesn't matter if it's an inch or a pound, a gain is a gain. Remember a pound of muscle is healthier than a pound of body fat. Staying fit through resistance or cardiovascular training may help build strength, burn more calories and improve athletic performance (which wouldn't hurt for that possible upcoming fitness assessment).

3. Energy for days
Ditch the energy drink and coffee, working out consistently and eating healthier will improve your overall energy without all the caffeine. Warning, increased energy may boost the desire to work out more.

4. Free fitness classes
Classes are free even if you don't participate in the competition, but if you join the challenge all aerobic classes, excluding yoga, count for 15 points toward your score. The score matters, and here's the reason why...

5. Cool prizes
The formula is simple. Depending on the type of exercises, points are accumulated.  The participant with the most points attained in the male and female category will be awarded a tablet. While the winning group will take home an electronic fitness tracker.

6. Increase overall fitness level
Do it for yourself, be the best version of yourself that you can be this year. It all has to start somewhere and  "The Biggest Winner" can be the stepping stone to increasing your fitness and improving your health. The fitness staff has the necessary tools, all you have to do is sign up before Jan. 15.
