The 31st Security Forces Squadron hosted three town hall meetings focused on travel safety and local area security, Nov. 23 and 24, 2015, at Aviano Air Base, Italy.

The town hall meetings were designed to provide information on travel restrictions in Europe and safety tips for the upcoming holiday season.

"We want you to be aware of the information that's out there and to know where to find it," said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Damian Schlussel, 31st Security Forces Squadron commander.

During the meetings, Schlussel touched on many locations that travelers are either restricted or discouraged from traveling to.

- Paris: Travel within a 50 km radius around Paris is prohibited until Nov. 30, 2015, for all U.S. military personnel, DoD civilian employees, contractors and command-sponsored dependents and family members. Read the complete message at http://eucom.dodlive.mil/2015/11/eucom-implements-travel-restrictions/.

- Brussels, Belgium: Travel to Brussels, Belgium, is prohibited until 7 p.m. on Nov. 28, 2015, for all U.S. military personnel, DoD civilian employees, contractors and command-sponsored dependents and family members. Read the complete message at http://belgium.usembassy.gov/security_messages.html.

- Rome/Milan: Travel to Rome and Milan is discouraged due to potential terror target areas. Read the complete message at http://italy.usembassy.gov/mobile//acs/security.html.

The town hall meetings highlighted several travel tips, like carrying a cell phone with an international roaming plan, notifying the chain of command of travel plans, and registering for the Smart Travelers Enrollment Program at https://step.state.gov/step/.

Before getting on the road, Team Aviano members can register at the STEP website to receive up-to-date advisories for locations around the globe. Additionally, travelers can visit http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en.html to read about security concerns before their trip.

"Plan smart and cover all your bases," said Schlussel. "We want everyone to have a fun and safe trip."

Travel tips were not the only topic covered in the town halls. Local area security practices were discussed because of the increased number of thefts and break-ins during this time of year.

"October to December is statistically the most prominent time when thieves do their holiday shopping ... in your home," said Schlussel. "There are twice as many vehicle and house break-ins this time of year, so don't make yourself a target of opportunity."

A residence can become an easy target when tenants put empty high-value item boxes in their recycling bins. Common stolen items include cash, gas coupons, electronics and jewelry. These items are usually left in plain sight and easily taken. People should remove or hide valuables inside vehicles to help prevent theft as well.

Aviano leaders want everyone to enjoy what Europe has to offer. Whether traveling or staying at home, be vigilant, have a plan and stay safe. Report suspicious activity to Eagle Eyes at 0434-30-EYES, the law enforcement desk at 0434-30-7200 or the crime prevention office at 0434-30-7210.
