Local barber aims high, credits past

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- The light buzzing of clippers is heard as an artist meticulously works to perfect his product.

He pays close attention to each detail, removing hair and applying product where and when needed. To an onlooker, this barber is just doing his job. To Eric Morris Santiago, his passion is so much more.

The former U.S. Air Force Airman said his upbringing and military service inspired his future goals. For starters, he hopes to open his own salon shop in New York City next year.

"I've enjoyed the opportunity to live overseas," said the Bronx, N.Y., native. "I grew up in New York and Washington D.C., so most of my exposure has been primarily around African-American and Latino individuals. [The military] has given me a different type of experience."

During his six-year enlistment, Santiago supported Okinawa Air Base, Japan, and Aviano's very own 31st Logistics Readiness Squadron. After separating, he returned home but later found himself at Aviano as a contractor for 10 years.

After marrying his wife, Sara Fillipetto, and finishing his term as a contractor, Santiago made the decision to stay in Italy. Like most lifestyle changes, the decision came with some challenges.

"I like living here, but it's different now. Before, I was under the 'American' umbrella while I was a contractor," Santiago explained. "It's a lot different being a contractor and getting logistical support versus living here as an Italian."

Initially Santiago had the idea to open his own barbershop after his contract ended. Unfortunately, he didn't have the necessary Italian barber's license to practice. Santiago decided to turn to his past to help progress his dream.

"I decided to work on base to keep my military affiliation," he said. "The military aspect of this business has given me the opportunity to be exposed to different people, which has influenced what I want to do."

Beyond his personal goals, he looks to Fillipetto for advice and ideas in creating their future business. The two continuously share information, operating as a well-oiled machine.

"What I learn I pass on to her," he said. "And there are certain things she knows that I don't; I need her as much as she needs me. We're a team."

Fillipetto is equally excited to open their future salon shop. She said she looks forward to the experience and the culture New York has to offer.

"I'm very excited, I love New York," she said. "The fact that he wants to return to his community and embrace all the people makes me proud."

Santiago continued to express the importance of not judging a book by its cover.

"I'm an entrepreneur. It's the business, the barbering, the hair products, the possibility of teaching someone--there are a number of things that come into play," said Santiago "A lot of times people look at a barber and think, 'Oh he's standing there cutting hair,'--there's a lot more to it, there's many different avenues you can travel on."

There is no question in Santiago's mind that the different avenues will all lead him to success, so long as he keeps his wife, determination and, most importantly, his desire close to his heart.
