In just over a year's time at Aviano, my trip to Ljubljana, Slovenia, marks the 15th city I've visited across four countries, and Ljubljana takes the cake. The city is the smallest one I've visited in both size and population and is just a two hours' drive from Aviano, Italy.

Nearly all the city's major attractions are within walking distance of one another, and they cost little or no money to see. Also, weekly and seasonal markets are available in the city square depending on the time of year.

If you visit Ljubljana take the opportunity to visit some of the city's most notable attractions: Ljubljana Castle, Ljubljana Cathedral, Three Bridges, Dragon Bridge, Butchers' Bridge and the Town Hall.

The Ljubljana Castle is set on a small hill. You don't have to be a seasoned hiker to make it to the top, but it is high enough to offer a glimpse of all of Ljubljana. If you're concerned with the hike, a rail car is available for 4 Euro.

The castle was originally constructed in the 16th century to help defend against an Ottoman invasion. It later served as a prison until 1905, when it was turned into a museum.

After visiting the castle, we returned to the city square to see the Dragon Bridge and Butchers' Bridge. Both cross the Ljubljanica River. The Dragon was constructed in 1900 to replace a dilapidated oak bridge. Legend says the dragons seated on the ends of the bridge are those slain by Jason and his Argonauts.

Butchers' Bridge, a block from the Dragon Bridge, is one of the oldest bridges in Ljubljana. What was once home to butcher shops, now holds thousands of locks that couples attach to the bridge's railings, symbolizing their declaration of eternal love.

Aside from the many sights, the town hosts several shopping areas, restaurants and cafés.
