Due to the rise in vehicle accidents during the rainy weather, Team Aviano members are reminded to stay vigilant while driving.

According to the 31st Fighter Wing safety office, excessive speed and weather conditions contributed to six major and eight minor vehicle accidents since Nov. 3.

"The main reason why vehicle mishaps happen during wet conditions is because drivers are going too fast, they are following too close to the car in front of them or they are not paying attention," said Master Sgt. Adrian Hall, 31st FW ground safety manager.

Italian roads are made of a nonporous rock, which can be slicker when wet. Properly maintaining your vehicle and driving for weather conditions can ensure a safe arrival.

"We have information that some roads in Barcis have flooded due to the increase in rainfall and are closed," said Hall. "There is also a possibility of flooding in Pordenone and Sacile if the rain continues."

The safety office recommends practicing the following precautions when driving in the rain:
-Decrease driving speeds and allow extra time for travelling
-Pay attention and double check for other vehicles
-Avoid flooded areas and do not attempt to judge the depth of water pools

"Be aware that as little as six inches of water can cause you to lose control of your car or can potentially stall your engine," said Hall. "If your vehicle begins to be swept away or if it is suddenly caught in rising water, leave it immediately and seek higher grounds."

Service members who drive on the roundabouts near Area 1, 2 and F should take serious precautions during inclement weather. According to the safety office, these areas have the highest risk of potential accidents near base.

"Ultimately, its the individual behind the wheel responsibility to have control of the vehicle," said Hall. "Ensure you take the right safety measures and know the necessary tools to make the appropriate decisions while driving is paramount during the rainy season in Italy."
