On a recent trip, my family and I embraced our 'inner child' by venturing to Gunzburg, Germany, where we visited Legoland Park and stayed at the Legoland Resort.

Once we reached the resort, we got our tickets, parked the car and walked to the park. There were several perks to staying at the resort. My favorite was getting to walk back and forth between the resort and park each day as our SUV sat in the parking lot.

Many tourists flock to Legoland during the summer months, which means longer lines and warmer temperatures. If you're looking to travel there off-season, aim for the spring or fall months. Since we visited in late May, the weather never topped 80 degrees and we didn't wait longer than 10 minutes for any ride.

The park is much smaller compared to its counterpart in California, and walking around the park only takes about 30 minutes. The resort complex is oval shaped. At the front end is the restaurant and check-in area. At the back end are two castle hotels. On either side are several small groups of duplex suites, each with its own theme - race cars, pyramids, airplanes, pirate ships and the old west. In the middle is a small pond where a handful of zip lines stretch across it. There is also a large, climbing complex. Either can be enjoyed for an additional fee. Off to the side of the pond is a small race track with a dozen or so kids' bikes that kids can ride for free.

Resort tickets also include a free pass to a large continental breakfast consisting of whole and sliced fruits, veggies, meats, eggs, cereal, oatmeal, toast, croissants, donuts, cold and hot beverages, and all the fixings you can imagine. The breakfast is hosted in a huge, warehouse-size building with windows for all its walls, which makes the dining experience very inviting, relaxing and spacious.

Another perk for staying at the resort is the free two-day passes to the park tourists can receive. These types of deal do change from time to time.

The trip to Legoland and the resort was the best trip we've had in nine years in the military. If you need help finding your 'inner child', this trip is for you too.
