Aviano's "Dirt Boys" are known for doing road construction and getting knee deep in gravel, asphalt and of course dirt. Recently, these Airmen decided to give back to the community by building a new parking lot in Area 1.

Five Airmen from the 31st Civil Engineer Squadron came up with the idea to use recycled asphalt to build the new parking lot, not only did the Airmen help save expenses but they also built the parking lot in a matter of weeks.

Parking has been a challenge for teachers and parents for quite some time. Thanks to the "Dirt Boys" and the new parking located behind the Child Development Center parking and traffic issues have been alleviated.

According to Master Sgt. Camon Tucker, 31st Civil Engineer Squadron chief of heavy repair, Airmen saved approximately $40,000 by using recycled asphalt. From his experience the recycled asphalt has better results than gravel.

"I am real happy and pleased that these Airmen were able to make their idea a reality," said Lt. Col. Scott Vaughan, 31st Mission Support Group deputy commander. "It's good to know that we have smart Airmen out there trying to do smart things for everyone."

According to Airman 1st Class Zachary ToniniHoover, 31st Civil Engineer Squadron pavements and equipment apprentice, the idea to build a parking lot was brought to their attention and the spot behind the CDC was the perfect area for it.

ToniniHoover played many roles in building the parking lot, he operated the machinery, hauled material in and out, placed pads for the driving lane with a loader and also operated the roller to compact the asphalt millings.

"We didn't contract it out because it was a good project for us and we knew it was cheaper for us to do since we used recycled asphalt," said ToniniHoover. "This project was a lot of fun, we hoped to improve parking for the school and CDC, and we accomplished just that."
