AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- Following in the Wyvern fitness center’s footsteps, the Dragon fitness center is opened for 24-hour operations, July 25, to give Aviano community members more opportunities to work on their Pillars of Fitness.
“The Wyvern offers a lot of equipment, but it doesn’t have the same space as the Dragon,” said Chad Cruse, 31st Force Support Squadron recreational aid. “Now, our users have access to the entire suite of fitness rooms in the Dragon for sports, PT, or just another place to exercise individually.”
The statement of understanding, which outlines the rules during unmanned facility hours, still applies to Dragon users.
“Everyone who has access to the fitness centers knows the rules, but we’ve revoked access to some members,” said Cruse. “The biggest problem is people letting other users into the gym without everyone checking in.”
Cruse said all users, even in groups, must individually check in via their common access cards or fitness center access cards. The system ensures accountability of customers and if users don’t sign in, they endanger themselves in the event of an emergency.
To gain access to both gyms, members can register CACs or obtain fitness center access cards at the Dragon during manned hours. Those with prior access don’t need to register again.
Cruse also reinforced the rules regarding minors in Air Force facilities. The Dragon has areas designed for children, but minors aren’t allowed in an unmanned facility even if supervised.
Cruse said he is excited the Dragon is open at all hours, and he hopes this will keep Aviano fit to fight.
“I spend a lot of time in the gym and I hate skipping a day,” said Cruse. “With this new access, I hope everyone has the chance to exercise and stay healthy, 24/7.”
