AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy --
Once a year, on Halloween, it’s socially acceptable for people of all ages to dress up as, just about anything.
Whether thrown together or planned out for months, many people put more thought into their costume than into staying safe. Here are six tips to keep you and your family safe, to help prevent a sad Halloween.
1. Costumes can be cute and safe too.

Ensure you and your family are visible during trick-or-treating by fastening reflective materials to costumes and bringing a flashlight with you. Accessories, such as swords, should be soft and flexible. Fitted costumes can prevent tripping or falling and masks should not obstruct your vision. Additionally, you can prevent skin or eye irritation by testing make up in a small area before application, and removing it before bed.
2. Watch your step…

Remain vigilant for moving cars and always look both ways before crossing
the street. Avoid crossing the street between parked cars and use crosswalks
when they are available. If you are trick-or-treating in an area without
sidewalks, walk in the direction of oncoming traffic and stay as far to the
side as possible.
3. Safety in numbers.

When trick-or-treating, make sure to walk in groups. Adult should escort
children to only visit well-lit homes. And don’t enter a stranger’s home.
4. Before the great feast on the
treats.
Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers. Also, inspect your children’s treats for choking hazards and tampering.
5. Partiers prepare.
If you are planning on going out and drinking, make sure to a have plan.
If your plan falls through, call Aviano’s Airmen Against Drunk Driving at 0434-30-2233
on Fridays and Saturdays between midnight and 4 a.m.
6. If you see something…

Say
something! Be sure to report any suspicious behaviors or activities to the 31st
Security Forces Law Enforcement desk at 0434-30-7200. Doing this won’t only
help protect you and your family, it will also help protect your Team Aviano
wingmen.
To help
promote a safer Halloween, Fall Fest will host several events on Oct. 28 and
29 on Area F. Additionally Freedom Park will host Trunk-or-Treating at 6 p.m.
on Oct. 31.
