Outdoor Recreation plans sporting trips to Slovenian Dolomites

Aviano Air Base, Italy -- People looking for a way to combine the stunning views of the Alps and getting fit can take an Outdoor Recreation trip to Slovenia next month.

Outdoor Recreation will host a hiking tour March 24 and a horseback riding and caving tour March 31.

Both trips can take up to eight people, but the hiking trip can take more if people sign up in advance.

"We would like to see more people get out and do more outdoor activities," said Marlyn Quade, 31st Services Squadron Outdoor Recreation assistant manager of programs.
People must sign up for the hiking tour by March 16 and for the horseback riding and caving tour by March 23.

"Both trips are guided and the hiking trip gives a novice hiker the opportunity to see the beautiful Slovenian countryside," Mr. Quade said. "The horseback riding trip has good horses and a guide to show you how to ride and help you out with anything."

The hiking trip is a four-to-six hour hike, but the trip can be lengthened or shortened based on weather conditions and group preferences. The cost is €40.25 per person and the price includes transportation and tour escort services.

"It's very good exercise," Mr. Quade said. "They will go high in the Dolomites and they should bring snacks, water and a camera."

Mr. Quade added that hiking participants should wear appropriate shoes and bring extra socks and sweaters.

Both trips are contracted and have an English-speaking guide who will tell adventurers about the area they are visiting.

People interested in the horseback riding and caving trip must be at least 16 years old. When the group arrives at the Krisna Jama cave in the morning, half the group will tour the cave and the other half will go horseback riding. The groups will switch in the afternoon.

The cost is €125 per person and includes a four hour guided tour in the caves, a two hour horseback ride, transportation and a tour escort. Between activities, the group will have time for breakfast and lunch.

Additionally, Outdoor Recreation is seeking people to lead or teach outdoor activities such as rock climbing and hiking.
